HOLIDAY HELPERS 2015
In December our three teams got together to collect gifts for two worthwhile programs: the Holiday Gift Program at Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook (14U) and The Container Store’s Holiday Hugs (12U and 16U). In addition to their efforts to make the holiday season brighter for both underprivileged children in our area as well as those spending their holidays at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, the events gave the teams an opportunity to bond and have a little fun together off the practice field. We extend big thanks to YSGN and The Container Store for letting us be a part of their holiday giving and look forward to more chances to get involved in 2016.
#BreastCancerAwarenessMonth and #BeBraveBaylee
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and all three Shockwave teams will wear pink all month long to show their support for all those who have battled/are battling the disease. According to the Susan G. Komen web site, “in 2015, it is estimated that among U.S. women there will be: 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer [and] 40,290 breast cancer deaths” (see “Breast Cancer Facts and Statistics“). Who do YOU play for?
Illinois Shockwave is also showing support for Baylee Hoaldridge, a 15-year-old softball player from Provo, Utah, who was in a horrible accident back in July. Baylee remains in the hospital fighting for her life. Our 16U team purchased “Be Brave Baylee” bows (part of a fundraising effort in Utah) and has been wearing their bows to games to show their support for Baylee. Our 14U team is collecting to contribute to “Blessings for Baylee,” a Go Fund Me account to help the family with the medical bills not covered by insurance. Our entire organization prays for Baylee’s recovery.
For the 2014/15 playing season, our Shockwave players have been asked to line up their own individual sponsors (family and friends) who will contribute designated amounts per either hits or (for pitchers) strikeouts. Each player was also asked to pick a pet charity, which will receive 50% of the funds raised by that player at the end of the season. Sponsors will be given a link to GameChanger and granted special access to their player’s stats so they can follow their player’s progress. Listed below are the pet charities of each player (you can click on them to visit their respective web sites and learn more about the work they do):
Bass – American Heart Association
Butler – Heartland Animal Shelter
Lapitan – St. Jude’s
Liberty – Chicago Police Memorial Foundation*
Rodgers – Uweza Aid Foundation
Sapienza – Wounded Warrior Project
Swanson – Sister Paulanne’s Needy Family Fund
