Illinois Shockwave had a great weekend in Evanston at the Evanston Express Memorial Day Classic tournament. 14U won the championship in their division for the second year in a row and 12U came in second place in their division with a very well-played final round.
14U went undefeated in three games of pool play and were the first seed going into the playoffs on Sunday. First they played Vernon Hills and won 12-0 in three innings. They then went on to the semi-finals to face Sauganash Storm and won 14-2, also in three innings. This advanced them to the championship game pitting them against Windy City Thunder. Shockwave took an early lead but the Windy City Thunder had a big third inning to pull ahead 4-3. In the fifth inning, Shockwave scored 2 more runs, but a sixth inning rally added six more runs to the team’s total, which resulted in a big win. The final score was 11-4. 14U went the entire weekend undefeated. It was truly a team effort with everyone’s contributions. Way to go, 14U!
12U went 2-1 in pool play, winning 20-6 against Sauganash Storm Silver and 10-1 against Lincoln Way Storm. They suffered an 8-3 loss to Windy City Thunder. In Sunday’s elimination rounds, the team beat Sauganash Storm Black (11-1) and Vernon Hills Stingers (12-0) to advance to the championship round, in which they ultimately fell to the Windy City Thunder in a close game (2-1). A 12U parent commented that “despite the 2-1 loss leading to our 2nd place finish, it sure felt like the best played game of the year, capping off a great weekend of softball.” With two second-place finishes and a championship under their belt this early in the season, 2016 is shaping up to be an awesome year for the 12s. Congrats!
